michael jacksons1 300x214 Among Michael Jacksons “MJ’s” Favorites

People from all walks of life have their favorites. From clothes to books; to actors and actresses; to friends and siblings; to music and songs and what more to food or cuisine. As recorded, the following are Michael’s favorite things. His favorite colors are red and black. His favorite videos (of his) are Thriller and Smooth Criminal. His favorite movies are Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Wars and E.T. His favorite number is seven while Steven Spielberg is his favorite director. His favorite place on earth is Disneyland while his favorite ride there is Pirates of the Caribbean. Opium is his favorite perfume while Orange Gatorade is his favorite drink. Pinocchio is his favorite animated character and chimpanzees are his favorite animals. And Smile is his favorite song. While Mexican food is his favorite cuisine, he also loves cheese potatoes, KFC, sushi, spicy foods and M & Ms among others. Likewise, he loves to dine at his favorite restaurant El Chollo in Los Angeles. But this is a fact, very few people knew the real Michael Jackson. The shy superstar remained a mystery to everyone around him, except the people he spent his days with. Michael’s three children and his staff perhaps knew Michael better than anyone else in the entire world.

Michael Jackson, the late great pop singer, was a famous vegetarian and professed his love for Mexican food in many interviews. And being a Mexican vegetarian cuisine lover; Mexican Chilaquiles, is a vegetarian dish Michael Jackson would have loved today. Truly indeed, Michael is a vegetarian. And that can be noted since modern Mexican food whose main ingredients are corn and the famous frijoles, or beans with frijoles as the essential vegetable in the majority of Mexican kitchens as they are easy to prepare, cheap and quite nourishing. All Mexican food appears to combine easily with the aftertastes and ingredients of other foreign cuisines.

Some have thought of things how to honor the famous and well loved Michael Jackson. Even in line with food preparation, one has thought of a7-layer dip as a tribute to MJ knowing number 7 as his favorite number. It can be an easy family favorite and while every member of family adding one layer of the ingredients of the of the 7-layer dip, MJ’s music is played in the background. Indeed, this is an easy way on how to give tribute to a legend that everybody in the globe loves. Music is indeed a perfect synonym for Michael Jackson.

swine flu1 300x225 Update on the A(H1N1) Virus a.k.a. Swine Flu

It was April 2009 where we first covered the emergence of the swine flu. It was then spreading fast in Mexico and some parts of America. On June 11, 2009 the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that the swine flu is now a Pandemic, not because of its severity, but because of the speed at which it spreads. With the Southern hemisphere flu season now upon us, the WHO declaration is more than justified.

Community level outbreaks started which alarmed the world. The declaration of a pandemic was just a reflection of these outbreaks. No need to needlessly worry, although people should still stay vigilant and exercise proper precautions and personal hygiene at all times.

You can help protect yourself and reduce the spread of any virus. All you need to do is observe proper precautions and personal cleanliness. For example, you can cover your nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing. You should always teach your children to wash their hands with antibacterial soap regularly. You can avoid crowds and tune in to the news for additional information. You can teach your children to avoid touching their eyes, mouth, and nose (this is how sickness can spread). There are a lot of things that you can do to contribute against the swine flu or regular viral infections. We are not completely helpless in this regard.

We are still waiting for a vaccine to be made. Although the French Pharmaceutical company, Novartis, claims to have made an effective batch of swine flu vaccine, it is not yet known when it will be available for public consumption. Australian researchers are also developing a vaccine using caterpillar cells.

Clearly, the vaccine for swine flu is not too far off before we get it. A lot of alarmist mentally has emerged from this debacle, but most people infected by this flu have recovered without needing any medical assistance.

It must be repeated that the swine flu should not be underestimated. It is a real threat. However, alarmist mentality should be negated by proper information of the severity of the threat. The fact is, dengue fever has a much worse casualty count than swine flu. Dengue fever caused by day time, female mosquitoes is a much severe case than this new swine flu cases upon us.

terrorism11 300x222 A Perception on the Impact of Terrorism on Tourism

The economic importance of tourism is undeniable. For many countries in the developing world, tourism is a significant source of revenue generation and therefore a major component of economic development, a relationship that rewards states when positive conditions such as a strong global economy exists. But what happens when negative conditions exist? What happens when things like terrorism exist? The impact of terrorism on the country’s economy may be immense, leading to unemployment, homelessness, deflation, and other economic and social ills.

The consequences extend beyond activities directly associated with tourism, particularly airlines, hotels and catering, to sectors that supply intermediate needs hence it can be said that all sector of economy are greatly affected. More specifically when it comes to international tourism. International tourism is presently playing as a major source of foreign currency. It has been recognized for its direct and indirect impact on government revenue, the country’s employment and summarily the country’s income.

But what happens when terrorism occurs. What effects will it bring? Negative repercussions follow. Terrorism brings multiplier effects, negative effects to be precise. Countries where the tourists came from will issue statement such as “unsafe for tourist travel.” Travel advisories issued by certain embassies warn their nationals against travel to places known to have been attacked by terrorists. Debates like terrorism vs. tourism have been undertaken by many scholars. Furthermore, as terrorism against tourists often involves international citizens, international terrorism is defined as “terrorism involving citizens or the territory of more than one country.”

However, these negative effects of terrorism are also true to domestic tourism. Incidents like kidnapping, unstable peace and order situation caused by domestic terrorists caused indirect effects like increased time, cost and inconvenience involved in travel because of added security arrangements. Regardless of the effects of terrorism, tourism is unlikely to decline overall. People place great importance on their holidays and are not likely to relinquish them easily. The more likely effect of terrorist attacks and other disasters is to the specific destinations or regions suffer a decline in tourism with travel moving to other locations. This is so because tourism and leisure travel are voluntary activities and because there are many alternative destinations to choose from, security concerns can have a greater impact on the choice of the destination.

It is a fact and a public perception that the cost of terrorism on tourism is realistically immeasurable. Take a particular case with what had happened to the trade centers in New York; data showed that it had resulted in 4 million less international arrivals worldwide in 2001 in comparison to the previous year. This is a concrete example of how it had introduced fear and caused unwillingness to fly on transatlantic flights showing that the tourist industry was affected on a global scale not just in America.

With all these situations mentioned, it can be concluded that it is a major concern that terrorists will always manifest an interest in the tourism sector. What is needed is a collective effort to protect this vulnerable yet very important industry and show greater resilience because this industry has been the provider of employment and economic prosperity in many countries. The tourism industry must be able to remain resilient in the face of adversity. It must always be prepared to counter its major opponent, and that is terrorism.
